Homily / June 6th, 2021

This is my Sunday to address you about raising money for the new Parish Center. [Gary / Jaime and Patrina] spoke to you a couple of weeks ago about St. Francis as home. And that is so true. There is another description that I will add, and that is family. What draws people here to St. Francis is the experience of family that they find here. Many parishes will say that about themselves. But you truly live it. Look at us: white, black, Latino, LGBTQ, some well-off and some struggling to make ends meet, children and young adults and elders – we are all family.

A few examples of that: Jim Henry must have stock in the card company with all the greeting cards he sends out. He now sends them to me so that I will distribute them to those who celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and graduation. I am now officially the letter-carrier of Jim Henry! Ruben Hernández must have a list of people that he regularly visits throughout the week. I am so grateful for his visits, though I wonder if sometimes it isn’t to find out the latest gossip! Nadia Negrón and her daughters pick up Reuben Harpole for Mass -  can you find a more touching example of family than that to have Reuben walking in with these three little girls every weekend?! We are blessed to have young married couples in the parish – couples who form friendships through Mass, who have their children crawling around the floor after Sunday night Mass. These couples will tell me when they’re expecting another child even before they tell their own parents! One couple named their child after me. You have no idea what that means to me. But this is what family does.

Another function of family is that we are formed by our families. After 17 years here, I have been formed by you. You have taught me two very important lessons: #1, two key behaviors of a true Christian are humility and thanksgiving. Always be humble, especially in times of success and happiness; always be thankful, even in difficult, challenging times. The other lesson has to do with my priesthood. You have taught me that my job is not to judge; my job is to help. Thank you so much. These are lessons that you don’t learn in the seminary or in a classroom. You are family, and as family, you have formed me and others.

Family members also take care of the family. It is our first responsibility. Just as we sacrifice for our children, our grandchildren, and our family, I ask you to make this sacrifice for your parish family. Please think and pray about what you can offer over the next four years. Four years will make your contribution easier, and also hopefully make a larger contribution possible. If you can set aside $5 each week, over four years, you will have made a donation of $1,000. Is it possible to do that much?

In the history of St. Francis, there have always been sacrifices that people have made for the parish. We are no different. We are building more than just a new Parish Center; we are building on generations of people who found and made a family here. St. Francis is one of the leading parishes in the city of Milwaukee because of its service to the poor, its diversity in membership and its acceptance of everyone without judgment. Today is the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. This parish is very much the Body of Christ in how it feeds the hunger of people looking for a true parish family. Thank you for making this more than some average parish. We are family. This is our home. And we are the Body of Christ.

Muchas gracias a ustedes.

Somos familia. Este es nuestro hogar. Y nosotros somos el Cuerpo de Cristo.
